The First World War

  • Haryana was one of the main recruitment areas during the First World War. The rich people and mahajans of Haryana gave immense financial support to the Imperial Relief Fund, set up for the youths to join the recruitment drive.
  • Ram Bahadur Sukhlal of Sirsa donated Rs.10 lakhs. The maximum donation of 25 lakh was collected in Bhiwani district in the entire state.
  • For the active participation of the soldiers from Punjab region in the war, the Government provided a separate representation to the rural and urban areas on the basis of population of these areas, in the new Legislative Council.
  • This decision was opposed by Raibahadur Chaudhary Lalchand of Rohtak. As a result politics continued among Sir fazle Hussain, Lala Harkishan Lal and Chaudhary Lat Chand.
  • In Haryana, Pt Nekiram Sharma was against the military recruitment drive by the British during the First World War.
